Damn it feels good to be back in 2D! I didn't necessarily dislike the last 4 Mortal Kombat games (Deadly Alliance - MK vs DC Universe), but I found myself playing Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 more often. There's just something about the original MK formula that just didn't translate well to 3D gameplay. But when I saw that first trailer for the newest Mortal Kombat, my heart stopped. Finally, a revisit to what made the series great to begin with.

Mortal Kombat is the greatest thing to happen to the series since Trilogy. I can't put it down. Bringing back the original roster to the 2D plane and adding modern elements as well as turning the violence up further than it's ever been makes this the definitive Mortal Kombat game. I really don't even know where to begin.
It's definitely good to see gore make a comeback. I was so let down by the lack of it in MK vs DC. Fatalities are taken to the extreme this time and don't hold back on the red stuff (or green, blue, or black, depending on who you're killing). The fighting system is by far the most improved point of Mortal Kombat. In comparison to UMK3 (the last 2D MK), they've traded out the run button for a quick dash ability (double tapping forward or back) as well as reworked the combo system to be more fluid and customizeable as opposed to preset button combinations. Air combat has also been given an upgrade with the ability to juggle your opponent. This allows for some truly remarkable combos to be unleashed. Added to the game are new devastating X-ray attacks and enhanced special moves. All achieved through filling your special meter at the bottom of the screen. X-ray attacks slow battle down to show your fighter dealing/receiving excruciating blows that made all the more gruesome by showing the internal damage inflicted on the character ("X-ray", get it?). All of that aside, the game is just fun to play in general. I can see this becoming THE fighting game of the year, easily.

X-Ray attacks can be as brutal as some of the fatalities. |
Mortal Kombat is looking to be a must-have title to add to your fighting game collection.
