The amount of detail placed into the level design is astonishing. |
For starters, the game looks amazing. Sega really went above in beyond in breathing life into this level. I can honestly say that I am impressed. Graphically, this game could stand on it's own. Everything from the backdrops to the enemy reactions as you come across them, all of it feels like a living part of the Sonic world. If the rest of the game's levels continue on in this fashion, then the environments alone will be enough for me to be excited about Generations.
As far as gameplay is considered, this is definitely classic Sonic. The gameplay is ripped straight from Sonic 2, you only have the ability to jump, spin dash, and run really, really fast. There were no signs of the delayed jumping or having Sonic come to a dead stop when running full speed that Neal spoke of from the E3 demo. I can only assume Sega fixed this shortly after. The controls seemed tight, had no trouble getting Sonic to do what I needed to. However, I haven't decided if it's something I'm ready to find fault with because the game obviously states that this is old Sonic, but I constantly find myself wishing I could use the dash and homing attacks from Sonic 4 & Sonic Rush. I feel like Sega has trained me to rely on these so much in recent years that Sonic's gameplay feels neutered without them. I know that they will be attached to the new Sonic gameplay, but I found them more at home with the 2D gameplay.
With a little more work, this could end up being one of the Sonic's best yet. |
*The 3D mode looked great, but at a huge loss to the frame rate. I really hope this is something fixed in the final game because as it stands, 3D mode is better left off for now.
